The Adult Protective Services program has the very serious responsibility of helping dependent or elderly (age 65 or over) adults remain safely in their homes by responding to requests for help or reports of negligence or abuse. Services are free of charge, and all elderly and dependent adults (including the disabled ages 18–64) are entitled to services without regard to income or property if there is a need for protective services.
Protective services may be needed for a variety of reasons. The most common of these is self-neglect, where an adult’s safety or well-being is in question due to being unable to take care of basic needs, such as taking medicines, managing money, keeping the home clean and stocked with nutritious foods, doing laundry, or bathing. In some cases, disabled or elderly adults may be the victims of others, as in the case of financial fraud or physical abuse.
