Public Guardian

The Public Guardian takes charge of the personal care and finances of a person who has been found by the court to be incapable of taking care of him- or herself. Generally, these are older, frail, and/or disabled adults. Often, they have been victims of abuse or neglect. When there are no friends or relatives who are able to act as caretaker, the Public Guardian helps out.

The Public Guardian’s office conducts an investigation to find out what is needed and then determines how to best meet those needs. Arrangements are made for the person’s care and protection, which may include:

  • good health care
  • food and clothing
  • personal care
  • housekeeping help
  • transportation
  • recreational activities

Living arrangements are chosen that are appropriate, safe, and comfortable, and that allow as much independence as possible. Being under the care of the Public Guardian also helps assure freedom from becoming a victim of fraud or abuse.

If you, as a friend, relative, or other concerned citizen, believe that another person needs this type of assistance, contact the office of the Public Guardian to find out how they can help.
